Changes to First Presbyterian Church’s By-Laws

Posted on: January 23rd, 2012 by erincrowley No Comments

Dear Member,

The annual meeting of the congregation is this Sunday, January 29, after the 11:00am service of worship in the Sanctuary. The usual business of our annual meeting will be presented – election of corporate officers, presentation of the Session’s annual budget, submission of the terms of call for the two pastors for congregational vote, and other such matters.

This year the congregation will also be asked to consider and approve a revised set of by-laws for the congregation. Early in 2011, Maurice Caskey and a team of elders, were tasked by Session with rewriting the by-laws. Significant changes in the constitution of the PC (USA), many of those changes adopted with a view to more flexible, missional, and permission giving governance, the growing distance between our own best practices and our own by-laws, and the length of time that had passed since we had a thorough look at our by-laws prompted this re-writing. In early Fall the Session had a first reading of the by-laws, in late Fall, after amendment, they were approved to be recommended to the congregation.

The Bylaws are attached. Attached also, for those who want to give a more careful reading, are the original by-laws with tracked changes and the rationale for the changes.

Time will be given at the meeting to ask questions before your vote.

I’ll see you at the meeting.

Jerry Andrews
