About New Day:
Operating in the Grant Hills neighborhood of San Diego, the ministry began in 1968 as an outreach of Point Loma Presbyterian Church and the Presbytery of San Diego and runs primarily with volunteers who are supported by a small but mighty staff.
Guided by the love of Christ and his mandate to serve with compassion and humility, New Day’s staff and volunteers take the time to listen to clients, offer them Christ-centered support, and pray with and for them and their families.
In partnership with other agencies, New Day has an impact beyond its modest size, connecting clients to services such as those that can enable them to train for jobs or recover from addiction. This type of transformational work is what makes this ministry more than merely a social service agency but rather an embodiment of Christ’s call to serve Him through service.
New Day Urban Ministries is one of only two ministries common to the entire Presbytery of San Diego, which consists of 32 churches in the region. However, volunteers and financial contributions come from many denominations and sources.
New Day staff and volunteers work not only to meet clients’ immediate physical needs but to go beyond this level to offer psychological, social, and spiritual services that can lead to real transformations in their lives.
New Day restores lives by:
Supporting individuals and families in need of essential services
Giving hope for a new beginning to those in difficult circumstances
Assisting clients as they search for employment to further stabilized their living situation
Offering prayer and spiritual support
Providing a transformational experience to the volunteers
Job seeking assistance
New Day helps people get back on track with their employment search, helping clients secure personal identification documents and providing access to computers for employment searches.
Meeting basic needs
The ministry supports individuals and families in need by distributing groceries, clothing, snacks and hygiene kits. Clients are met in a one-on-one personal environment.
Personal prayer support
New Day staff and volunteers meet individually with clients, taking the time to listen to the details of their individual situation and challenges and offer prayer support in addition to the more concrete solutions.
New Day helped 9,000 individuals in San Diego last year (2019)!
