Questions for November 28
Acts
18:18-28 - A Great Help
1. Up until Ephesus, Paul was always the vanguard for the Gospel.
But Luke gives us the impression that Paul was so eager to return
to Jerusalem and to Antioch that he felt he must press on. What
is the spiritual and theological significance of Luke’s transition
word “meanwhile” (18:24)?
2. I am sure Paul would agree that it was the Lord God, and not
himself, who was orchestrating evangelism in Ephesus. What made
Apollos so special?
3. Luke lists a number of positive attributes of Apollos and
then adds one concern, “though he knew only the baptism of
John.” What did Priscilla and Aquila do to help Apollos? How
might they have responded to him differently?
4. Why does Luke emphasize the intellectual over the experiential
concern? Priscilla and Aquila “explained to him the way of
God more adequately.”
5. When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, why didn’t the
emerging church try to hold onto him?
6. Some have speculated that Apollos wrote the Book of Hebrews.
How would his authorship of Hebrews fit with his skills and gifts?
7. Although Paul was out of the picture, God raised up new leaders
to share the Gospel not only in Ephesus, but in Achaia as well.
What can we learn from this for our church?
