Mark 9:30-10:31 - Everyone is in Children's Ministry

1. In this extended passage there are four key references to children or “little ones.” Read through the text and identify them.

2. In the first reference, Jesus uses a little child as an “object lesson.” How does he use a child to reverse the meaning of greatness? In what sense does a child come first?

3. How do the preoccupations and prejudices of the disciples compare with what Jesus said they should be concerned about (9:38-50)?

4. In what sense could divorce (10:1-12) become a major stumbling block or hindrance to a child’s development?

5. Why does Jesus make children a Kingdom of God priority? Because of their cute personalities? Or, because of their potential? Or, because of their. . . ??

6. In the context of the “rich, young ruler” incident, Jesus addresses the disciples as “children.” Why does he refer to them as children and how does this relate to what has gone before?

7. How does Jesus use children to address adult issues (9:30-37), adult prejudices (9:38-50), adult problems (10:1-16) and adult priorities (10:17-31)?
