Ladle Fellowship
MISSION STATEMENT AND PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Our Mission:

We are called to share the truth, love and compassion of God with homeless and poor people in downtown San Diego. Serving meals, distributing food, clothing and other necessities to the needy are important elements of this calling, as are biblical evangelism, discipleship and mentoring.

We are called to deeper fellowship with Jesus. Serving the poor is a vital part of our fellowship with Christ. Serving and relating with the poor helps to humble our social and spiritual pride, to bring us closer to Christ and to make us fit for the kingdom of God.

We are called to bring issues related to homelessness, poverty and social justice to the attention of Christ’s church—especially her young people. We therefore publish and reprint relevant articles, give talks and offer internships for seminary students and others interested in urban ministry.

Program Description: The Sunday afternoon meal is preceded by a program of gospel music and Bible message. After a word of blessing, the meal is served. If you were our guest, your tray would usually include a hearty bowl of soup, warm dinner roll, baked potato and butter, milk, fruit and a piece of pie or cake. If guests are extra hungry, they may come back for seconds after everyone has been served. At the Request Table, a person may request three items of clothing and/or hygiene products. On an average day, we fill the requests of from 75 to 100 people. On Saturdays our volunteers distribute food from the San Diego Food Bank to the poor who live downtown. From time to time we help individuals with searching for a job or in reconnecting with family. Our ministry values the kind of one-on–one relationship building which opens the door for friendship evangelism. This, we believe, is the way God’s kingdom grows.

Discipleship Class is held on Thursday evenings. We meet to learn God’s word, fellowship and encourage one another in the challenge of becoming true and deep disciples of the Lord Jesus. A number of homeless Christians attend this meeting each week. FPC members and others are welcome to attend.

A phone is on occasion made available for those needing to find work or to reconnect with family. Opportunities for involvement in the Ladle ministry abound! From chopping carrots to folding clothes, we have a place where you can serve. Plus, we are always in need of donations of food, clothing and money. So please follow up on your initial interest by contacting the Ladle office and letting us tell you more about this challenging and rewarding ministry--and how you can help.
