This month our work at San Diego High and Perkins assists the staffs at these schools as they prepare for the start of school. Hopefully what our teams do will reduce staff “To Do” lists, which may be quite long at this time of year. It is inevitable, I suppose, that “being prepared” involves increasingly stressful activity as a deadline approaches. Maybe this is as true for school staffs as it is for me. But the Apostle Paul, writing to encourage his young protege, Timothy, reminds Timothy to “be prepared in season and out”. Paul is not talking about painting and polishing, of course. He’s talking about the other aspect of our work in these schools. “Being prepared” to share the gospel, even with words if anyone should ask. The picture that comes to mind when I read this “in season and out” is that of a wide receiver perfectly positioned for the next play or the left fielder being prepared for the next fly ball even though he has no idea when it will come.
